8657D by Agilent is a Pi/4 DQPSK Signal Generator in the 86xx series. 8657D features a Frequency Range of 100 kHz to 1,030 MHz and an Output Level of +7 to -143.5 dBm.

The Agilent 8657D Pi/4 DQPSK Signal Generator has a digital modulation capability for standard FM, pulse modulation, and AM formats. This model achieves the performance necessary for assessing mobiles for North American Digital Cellular (NADC) and Japanese Digital Cellular (PDC) radio systems. This Signal Generator is suited for in-channel testing of analog receivers. The 8657D improves upon the performance of the 8657 Signal Generator. This model has options which can be added, such as a high-stability reference, a front handle kit, etc.

Radios created for the NADC standard have to be able to operate in the analog AMPS cellular mode and the newer digital cellular mode. The Agilent 8657D Signal Generator accomplishes both of these requirements. While operating in the Pi/4 DQPSK mode, the frequency range is restricted to three separate ranges: 10 to 129.9 MHz, 801 to 965 MHz, and 1,420 to 1,540 MHz. The connected Pi/4 DQPSK modulator receives serial information, as well as a symbol clock from 20 to 25 kHz. However, AM and FM modulation are not accessible in the Pi/4 DQPSK modulation mode.

The Agilent 8657D has a high-performance pulse modulator, which can be utilized in analog and digital modulation modes. The rise/fall time is <35 ns and the on/off ratio is >70 dB lower than 1,030 MHz. When pulse modulation is used in conjunction with Pi/4 DQPSK modulation, the 8657D can completely simulate the TDMA properties of these systems. Additionally, the 8657D has the same specifications as the 8657B as high as 1,030 MHz when it is in the analog modulation mode.
