The 8648C is an Economy RF Signal Generator designed by Agilent. This model has a frequency range from 9 kHz to 3,200 MHz, a switching speed of <75 ms, an output range from +13 to -136 dBm, and SSB phase noise at fc 500 MHz: <-120 dBc/Hz. The Agilent 8648C has an optional pulse modulation or high power function. There are remote and memory interfaces available for semi-automated testing and a greater level preciseness.
The 8648C Economy RF Signal Generator has low modulation distortion, which is detrimental for harmonic distortion analysis. With an FM distortion of less than 0.5% typically, the user can complete measurements competently. Receiver hum and noise can also be precisely characterized with the low residual FM performance of this signal generator. Highly stable dc coupled FM accurately replicates digital signaling codes for FM receivers such as pagers with selective squelch.
One of the options available for the Agilent 8648C is Pulse modulation, Option 1E6. To activate this option, simply press AM (PULSE) two times. The MOD ON/OFF key activates or deactivates the pulse modulator. When the 8648C is in pulse modulation mode, pulse modulation must be turned off with the MOD ON/OFF key prior to turning off the instrument. If the 8648C is turned off while pulse modulation mode is active, the instrument will power on without an RF output. An important fact to note is that several keys are invalid when the pulse modulation screen is viewable, including: 1kHz+EXT DC, EXT DC, INT 400 Hz, INT 1kHz, and EXT AC.
